START WITH YOUR SPACE

What would you like to change?

Find the part of your project that matters most.

One fixture, one room or a wider lighting upgrade.

ROOM BY ROOM

Start with what happens in the room.

A useful lighting plan combines general light for moving around, task light for specific activities and accent light for features you want to highlight. Each room needs a different balance.

01 / PREPARE

Kitchen & dining

Place light where food preparation happens. Recessed lighting can provide general coverage, while under-cabinet lighting helps illuminate counters without your body casting a shadow. Pendants bring focus to an island or dining table.

Plan around: cabinet positions, work surfaces and separate switching.

02 / UNWIND

Living spaces & bedrooms

Combine comfortable background light with focused light for reading and a feature fixture where it suits the room. Consider reflections on a television or computer screen and how the room should feel in the evening.

Plan around: furniture, sightlines and a useful dimming range.

03 / GET READY

Bathrooms & vanity areas

Balance ceiling light with light around the mirror to reduce strong facial shadows. Fixture placement and the correct rating for exposure to moisture matter, especially near showers and tubs.

Plan around: mirror position, moisture exposure and colour consistency.

04 / GET THINGS DONE

Basements, halls & work areas

Low ceilings, darker finishes and changes in floor level need their own approach. Aim for usable light on the route or work surface, with switches where they are convenient to reach.

Plan around: ceiling clearance, task locations and the walking route.

Adding a new lighting point needs a wiring route, suitable support and an accessible installation location.

RECESSED LIGHTING & FEATURE FIXTURES

Pot light installation starts with the ceiling.

A neat grid is not always the best layout. Pot light positions should respond to work surfaces, seating, ceiling height and the beam spread of the selected fixture. Too many bright points can create glare without improving the areas you use.

Working with a finished ceiling

Joists, insulation, ductwork and access above the room affect the available wiring route. Shallow fixtures can help in some locations, but openings or finishing work may still be needed. Discuss likely patching before installation.

Replacing a pendant or chandelier

Share the fixture’s dimensions, weight and mounting instructions before purchase. Existing support, ceiling height and the position over furniture all affect installation. A new light in a new location needs a different scope from a straightforward replacement.

CHOOSE THE LIGHT BEFORE THE FITTING

LED upgrades: brightness, colour and control.

Replacing older lighting is a chance to improve how the light is delivered. Match the useful output and the look of the room, then compare energy use and controls.

Lumens · light output

Compare light output in lumens. Watts describe electricity use. The right output also depends on the beam, shade, mounting height and the surface you want to illuminate.

Kelvin · light appearance

Lower Kelvin values look warmer; higher values look cooler. Choose a consistent appearance across connected spaces and compare a sample against your finishes.

Controls · everyday use

Specify dimming before selecting fixtures. The lamp or LED driver and dimmer must be compatible; a dimmable label alone does not confirm every combination will work.

2700K

A warmer, softer appearance

3000K

Warm white with a cleaner feel

4000K

A cooler white appearance

These are common colour-temperature choices, not rules for every room. The background colours above are illustrative; compare the actual light before choosing.

Plan the switch as well as the light.

Confirm the manufacturer’s compatibility information, the number of connected lights and how low the lights should dim. For smart switches, check the existing wiring, multi-location switching and any hub or network requirements. Keep an easy wall-control option for everyday use.

OUTDOORS, AFTER DARK

Light the places you use.

Outdoor lighting installation should make an entrance, path or seating area easier to use without harsh glare. Start with the purpose of each light, then select the fixture and control.

ARRIVE

Entrances & security lighting

Illuminate the lock, steps and approach. Aim fixtures toward the area you need to see and away from neighbouring windows. Motion sensors or timers can limit unnecessary operating hours.

MOVE

Paths & landscape lighting

Define changes in level and the route through the garden without flooding the whole property. Fixture positions, cable routes and maintenance access should be considered together.

STAY

Patios & outdoor living

Use light suited to the activity, with a comfortable level for seating and a separate task light where needed. Choose fixtures rated for the actual exposure to rain and moisture.

FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Commercial LED lighting that suits the workday.

For offices, retail spaces and other business premises, begin with the existing fixture types, operating hours and the tasks performed below them. Consider screen reflections, light on products and how the space is occupied throughout the day.

A fluorescent-to-LED upgrade may involve complete fixture replacement or a compatible retrofit. The existing ballast, wiring, fixture condition and control system determine the suitable approach; LED tubes are not universally interchangeable.

Include in the project brief: fixture quantities, ceiling height, access equipment, occupied hours, any emergency-lighting interfaces and the preferred installation window. Ask for any energy estimate to state the original wattage, proposed wattage and operating hours.

A CLEAR SCOPE MAKES QUOTES EASIER TO COMPARE

What affects lighting installation cost?

Fixture count alone does not describe the installation. Atlix offers free estimates based on the lighting you want and the conditions at your property. These are the details that shape the scope.

01

Fixture & location

A replacement at a suitable existing point differs from a new lighting location. Decorative fixtures, mounting support and high ceilings can change the work required.

02

Access & electrical work

Finished ceilings, difficult cable routes, switch changes and additional wiring affect labour. Confirm whether ceiling repairs, painting and removal of old fittings are included.

03

Equipment & approvals

Clarify who supplies the fittings, lamps, drivers and controls. Include permit requirements and any building or strata approvals relevant to the property.

Before installation

Agree on fixture locations, models, colour temperature, switch groups and finishing responsibilities. Confirm the access needed and any permits before work starts.

At the final walkthrough

Check each light and switch group, review dimming and sensor operation, and keep product details and warranty documents. Discuss any remaining finishing work.

PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Before you choose your new lighting.

Can I supply my own light fixtures?

Send the product link and installation instructions before ordering. Suitability for the location, electrical approval, mounting requirements and dimmer compatibility need review. Confirm who handles missing parts, product returns and the fixture warranty.

Can you add pot lights in a condo or a concrete ceiling?

The available ceiling void, construction and building rules determine the options. A shallow fitting does not solve every access restriction. Surface-mounted or track lighting may be worth discussing where recessing fixtures is impractical; confirm strata approval before work.

Do lighting upgrades need an electrical permit?

Requirements depend on the work and the local authority. The City of Vancouver requires a permit for electrical work unless a listed exception applies. Do not assume a fixture installation is exempt because changing a bulb can be. Confirm the permit scope before installation.

Will LED lighting reduce my electricity bill?

LEDs can use less electricity than older lighting for comparable light output. Actual savings depend on the fixtures replaced, new wattage and hours of operation. Dimming and occupancy controls can change usage; a fixed savings percentage would need a project-specific calculation.

Can I upgrade the lighting one room at a time?

Yes, a phased plan can focus on the spaces you use most. Decide on colour temperature, fixture style and control compatibility early so later rooms can follow a consistent approach. Existing wiring still needs to be suitable for each stage.

What if my current lights flicker or keep going out?

Start with diagnosis rather than choosing replacement fittings. An existing fault or compatibility problem may need to be resolved first. Visit our Electrical Repairs & Troubleshooting page for that service.
