PANEL UPGRADES & SERVICE CHANGES
A clear plan. Room for what’s next.
Panel replacements · Service upgrades · Subpanels
START WITH THE RIGHT SCOPE
A full panel, ageing equipment and an undersized service are different problems. The first step is understanding which one your property needs to address.
01
Replace the panel and breakers while retaining the existing service size where suitable. This can address equipment condition or circuit-space limitations without increasing the amount of power supplied to the property.
02
Increase the capacity available to the property, such as a 100-amp to 200-amp service upgrade. The scope can include the panel, meter base, service wiring and changes to the utility connection.
03
Add distribution closer to a garage, renovation or new equipment. A subpanel provides circuit space; it does not, by itself, increase the capacity of your main electrical service.
Buying a 200-amp panel does not create a 200-amp service. The supply, protective equipment and wiring must be suitable for the intended service rating. Confirm the full scope before ordering equipment.
SIZE THE SERVICE AROUND YOUR PLANS
A 200-amp service can provide room for additional electrical demand, but the right size depends on your property. A 100-amp rating alone does not mean an upgrade is necessary.
A load calculation considers existing demand and proposed additions. Where suitable data is available, an electrician can also assess 12 months of meter history. Discuss load management or removing unused loads before committing to a larger service.
Heating, cooking, hot water and other major equipment all contribute to demand. Empty breaker spaces alone do not establish available capacity.
Share plans for a heat pump, EV charger, hot tub, suite or addition so the assessment considers the work ahead.
The proposed size also needs a suitable service connection. Equipment condition and the physical route help define the work required.

UNDERSTAND THE ESTIMATE
A panel replacement and a complete service change involve different work. A useful estimate explains the equipment, labour and connection work for your property, with inclusions and exclusions made clear.
01
Panel size, breaker requirements, the number of existing circuits and any additional circuits influence equipment and installation costs.
02
A larger service may require a different meter base, service wiring or mast. Overhead and underground connections have different site requirements.
03
Moving equipment, extending wiring, opening finished surfaces or arranging excavation can change the scope. Clarify responsibility for patching and restoration.
04
Permit and inspection requirements depend on the jurisdiction. Applicable BC Hydro connection charges should be identified separately from the electrician’s work.
Ask what is included for equipment, circuit work, permits and utility coordination, plus any exclusions for excavation or finishing. Send your project details for a free estimate.
LOOK BEYOND THE BREAKER BOX
The panel is one part of the job. Before renovation plans are finalized, discuss the path from the utility connection to the meter and panel, along with the circuits you want to retain or add.
An overhead service may involve the mast and attachment point. An underground service may involve conduit, trenching or other civil work. The existing setup and utility requirements determine what changes are needed.
Relocation needs more than a convenient wall. Access, working space, cable routing and utility requirements must be checked before the new position is confirmed.
A panel upgrade does not automatically mean rewiring the whole property. Existing circuits need assessment before reconnection; required corrections and grounding or bonding work should be included in the scope.

FROM ASSESSMENT TO RECONNECTION
01
Start with the existing panel, service and proposed electrical loads. Share renovation drawings or equipment details if available, and discuss access to the work areas.
02
Review the recommended scope, estimate and responsibilities. Identify any meter, service wiring or site work before setting an installation date.
03
Confirm permits, inspections and utility coordination where required. For a BC Hydro connection request, the customer has a role in completing the application and approving charges.
04
Carry out the agreed electrical work, arrange required inspection or authorization, and coordinate reconnection as applicable. Review the circuit identification and completed work at handover.
Permits and inspections are part of the plan. In Vancouver, panel and service work requires an electrical permit, and inspection is needed to finalize it. Outside Vancouver, confirm the authority for your address. See the City of Vancouver’s electrical permit guidance.

BEFORE YOU BOOK
Panel replacement or service work normally involves a planned power interruption. The expected outage and reconnection arrangements depend on the scope and required coordination. Discuss your household or business needs before the work date; the overall project lead time is separate from the period without power.
Not necessarily. Circuits that remain suitable may be reconnected, while damaged, unsuitable or altered wiring can require additional work. A site assessment establishes whether the project is limited to the panel and service or includes circuit corrections.
Ask Atlix to assess the existing fuse panel, wiring and service capacity. Replacement planning should account for equipment condition and your intended use. The presence of fuses alone does not establish that you need a larger service.
The cause needs diagnosis first. A tripping breaker may be responding to an overloaded circuit or another fault; replacing the entire panel may not resolve it. Describe when the problem happens so the right work can be assessed.
An individual unit’s panel is only part of the building’s system. Feasibility depends on the unit supply, shared electrical capacity and any work affecting common property. Discuss the proposed changes with the strata or property manager before committing to the project.
The schedule depends on assessment, equipment availability, permits and any utility or inspection appointments. Confirm these dependencies before booking other trades. A firm installation date should follow confirmation of the required arrangements, rather than a generic turnaround promise.
